At Mace, we’re proud of the scale, pace and complexity of the projects we deliver. From iconic skyscrapers and life science facilities to transformative infrastructure across more than 40 countries, we’re always looking to push boundaries and raise standards. But as our business grew globally, so did the need to rethink some of the fundamentals, starting with how we hire.
We realised that our pre-employment screening process wasn’t keeping pace with the demands of a modern, fast-moving construction business. Our projects rely on the right people, in the right roles, at the right time and we needed more than a compliance tick-box. As part of that, we also wanted to ensure that all new hires could meet the minimum screening standard (BPSS) to enable them to work on government-related projects. We needed a screening solution that was intelligent, adaptable and aligned to the realities of global project delivery.
That’s why we partnered with Matrix Security Watchdog. Working with the Matrix team, we introduced a screening approach that gave us real-time insight, control, and most importantly, confidence. We were no longer reacting to problems; we were proactively managing risk. Their screening platform, combined with role-specific screening packages and integrated tools like Konfir, transformed how we vet candidates across our global operations.
One of the biggest challenges we faced previously was the time and resource burden on our internal HR teams. Manual referencing created delays. Last-minute security clearance issues caused friction at mobilisation stages. We also needed to be able to respond to increasing client expectations around transparency and auditable hiring practices. Matrix helped us address all of that.
Now, I’m happy to say that we can track the status of every candidate through one intuitive platform. Our hiring managers have better visibility. Our candidates experience a smoother journey. And our HR teams are free to focus on strategic people work, not chasing paperwork.
For roles that require government-level clearance, our checks have significantly reduced delays. That means fewer hold-ups on project mobilisation, something that’s vital in our sector where time is money. We’ve also benefitted from a dedicated candidate manager who supports applicants through the process, helping us to maintain a strong employer brand while upholding high standards.
Another integral part of the solution is that we meet regularly with Matrix to review service performance, share insights and ensure the process continues to meet our evolving needs. That collaboration has been key with responsive, pragmatic solutions, focused on continuous improvement.
We operate in a highly regulated, high-trust environment. Our clients expect (and deserve) confidence in every part of our delivery chain, including the people we bring into our business.
Now, we can demonstrate clear, responsible hiring practices across borders and job types.
Screening may not be the most glamorous part of workforce planning, but it’s one of the most critical. It’s the foundation for trust, safety and performance and it underpins the quality we strive for in every project.
I am thankful that we found a partner who understands that. Their approach has supported our mission to deliver better, faster, and safer; while building the talent we need to lead the future of construction.
