The current economic climate means that employers are looking for more innovative and targeted ways of engaging with top calibre students and potential graduate recruits. Students on campus are flooded with invitations to skills sessions, careers fairs and employer presentations and through this recession have become somewhat cynical about the reality of what the employment market they are just about to enter may hold.
Top flight students are increasingly seeking different ways of interacting with organisations. They are choosing to spend their spare time playing an active role within the university societies, clubs and sports teams, using these interests as a platform to engage with employers who are equally interested in targeting students who are active in these areas. Active participation in extra curricular activities at university is key in developing strong communication, leadership and teamwork; exactly the skills that employers are looking for in their future graduate recruits.
TARGETevents, part of GTI Recruiting Solutions – experts in graduate attraction, selection and recruitment, appreciate the ongoing battle that employers face to find graduates with outstanding academics as well as experience in developing leadership, teamwork and communication skills.
The 8 Task Challenge perfectly addresses these issues. The event, targeted primarily at students who are involved in university clubs and societies has received huge levels of interest on campus. It will allow students to test themselves mentally and physically while at the same time interacting with potential employers. The event being run in partnership with Grant Thornton, will see 65 teams from the UK’s top universities canoeing, cycling and walking/running around a specially designed course at Rutland Water. Teams will also be mentally challenged as they complete the course through employer specific checkpoint tasks. The event has attracted lots of employer interest as recruiters will be able to interact with students who are excellent ‘all rounders’ in a completely different environment. Maria Floud from Grant Thornton, primary sponsor for the event said We're really pleased to be the lead supporter for the new 8 Task Challenge. It's a great fit for us as its inclusive and open to all students, helps wellbeing as its about being physically and mentally active and it helps students build their CV. There's also going to be a donation to The Alzheimer's Society who we support and we get to have a fun day out too. Student teams will be competing for the chance to win prizes for themselves and their clubs and societies.
