Literacy Toolkits from the National Literacy Trust and Walker Books are set to inspire pupils to enjoy reading and help teachers and parents to support children’s literacy skills. Each box includes:
- A fantastic range of 50 books from Walker Books, aimed at children and young people aged 7 to 11
- Fun activity sheets and other information for teachers to use in the classroom and send home
- Guidance and templates to help schools engage parents and their local community
- National Literacy Trust membership for a local school for one year, giving access to inspiring teaching resources and tools for outstanding literacy provision.
The National Literacy Trust and Walker Books worked together to develop the content for the toolkit, drawing on expert knowledge and experience with schools.
Mel Benson and Anna Wilson from the Castle Education division presented the Toolkit to Tim Jolly, Head Teacher and Helen Thompson, Head of Literacy at Braeburn school, on Friday 17th May 2019.
Jonathan Douglas, Director of the National Literacy Trust, said:
“We are delighted that Castle Education has brought a love of reading to children at Braeburn school through the gift of a Literacy Toolkit. Every toolkit is filled with brand new books, activity sheets and colourful materials to get children excited about books and reading, as well as guidance and National Literacy Trust membership to help teachers support children’s literacy development all year round. When children enjoy reading, they do better at school and are happier with their lives, so we hope that many more businesses will follow in the footsteps of Castle Education to bring the transformative love of reading to children in their local communities.”
Kerry Hope, MD of Castle Employment Group, commented:
“We are absolutely delighted to team up with the Literacy Trust to offer the Literacy Toolkit to Braeburn School. In helping young people to read and write more effectively. This in turn improves the future of everyone in society. Literacy is critical to economic development as well as individual and community well-being.”
Helen Thompson, Head of Literacy at Braeburn School, said:
“We are incredibly grateful for the kind gift. Our children were very excited to look inside the box and see which books we had been given. We intend to use the books as a reward to promote reading at home and we will be using the membership to the Literacy Trust across the school.”
