Committed employees 'brave the weather to get to work'

Offices with a good workplace culture are likely to find that more of their staff make the effort to come in during the adverse weather conditions in the UK, one industry expert has claimed.

In the opinion of Gary Teper, human resources director at London brokerage firm Charles Stanley, the snowfall and icy conditions can be a test of employee loyalty and their commitment to their job.

He told Personnel Today that one member of staff at his firm braved the weather and spent nine hours on a train from Edinburgh to get to work, leaving at 03:00 and arriving in London at midday.

Mr Teper said: If you have a long-standing, engaged workforce that understands its role within the organisation, your staff will make the effort.

Such responsible attitude pays off too, as a spokesperson for ClickAJob emphasises.

Staff with strong commitment tend to work with greater focus, they're more perceptive and efficient, he says.

In tough times, they are the ones to rely on - and when things are going well, they are the ones who move forward, he continues.

Earlier this week, it was estimated by the Federation of Small Businesses that around 6.5 million employees were unable to make it to work because of the snow on Monday, costing the British economy 1.2 billion.
