How to organize your open home office space

This the season – to get organized! If you’re like most people, you have at least a week off from work where you can dedicate your time to some worthwhile projects around the home.

And, if you are one of the many who jumped into remote work without preparation, there is probably a lot of organization to do.

Those who were lucky enough to have a separate room for their home office probably got organized early on, but when you don’t have a spare room and your common areas are built in an open concept floor plan it’s much more difficult to get (and stay) organized.

To make the best of a less-than-ideal situation, consider buying home furniture for your common areas that can double as home office organization and workspaces. When you order from a USA furniture shop you’ll get even more ideas, but here are a few to get you started.

Console tables

Console tables are a perfect way to get yourself a functional desk without adding a separate piece of furniture to the home. The console table can be arranged behind your sofa or sectional, against one wall of your living area, or arranged in front of a window. It will be just another piece of furniture in the living room on a regular basis, but when you need a more structured place to work at your computer this will be the perfect option.

Geometric or ladder open shelves

If you have interesting geometric or ladder-style shelving, you can easily make use of it to display some of your work from home items. Use it to display any career or professional awards and accolades, or use it as a place to store a few occasionally needed reference volumes and small wifi equipment like a router. These also make great charging stations.

Hutches

With the dining room open to the rest of the communal areas of the home, you can easily make use of your dining set to help you organize for the business of work. A polished wood dining table can double as a professional conference table, and an accent cabinet in the room can store the accouterments needed to use the table for that purpose.

If the dining set that catches your fancy also has a hutch, you should grab it as well. A dining room hutch and a bookshelf with doors are surprisingly similar, and there is nothing wrong with using them for both.

Buffets and sideboards

Another helpful piece of dining room furniture that comes in handy to store office supplies is buffets or sideboards. In an open concept home, these can be beautiful transitions from one “room” to the next. Even better, their many drawers, doors, cabinets, and cubbies will allow you to store everything you need to work remotely in an easily accessible but completely out of site manner.
