Recruitment specialists across the country are seeing a marked increase in their workload as late autumn is traditionally the busiest period of their corporate calendar. With the summer holidays long forgotten and Christmas parties not yet around to offer a distraction, late autumn is one of the most productive periods of the year for recruitment.
Scotlandís fastest growing recruitment specialists, Search Consultancy, says all the signs are that Scotlandís corporate community is approaching the year end with optimism and enthusiasm.
Kai McCabe, Managing Director of Search Consultancy says, ìSeptember marks the end of the summer period and brings with it a new commitment to setting corporate objectives and exploring ways to meet them. Many managers are glad to see the back of summer, which is always seen as a quieter, lazy season, and most breathe a sigh of relief when the cooler weather kicks in so that things can get back to normal. Many use this as a trigger to implement changes and shake things up a bit.î
Ironically though, as autumn gives way to winter, the demand for temps also steps up, as those whose holiday calendar runs from January to December desperately try to use up their annual leave entitlement before it disappears.
Kai explains, ìIndustries such as Manufacturing and Hospitality are all actively recruiting in the months before Christmas, and many rely heavily on their temporary staff members to get them through the build up to the festive season.
ìConsequently, the three months or so before Christmas are especially busy for recruitment consultants who provide support to these companies, some of which rely on hundreds of temporary workers at this time of year.î
Itís a potential problem though that permanent staff can be guaranteed to realise about October-time that they need to use up outstanding holidays or perhaps lose the entitlement.
ìThe result, however, is the same ñ towards the end of the year ñ and at an already busy time, companies are finding themselves short-staffed, and in need of temporary workers to help plug the gap.î
Itís all good news for recruitment consultants and jobseekers alike however and there are probably more job vacancies around at the moment than at any other time of the year.
All sectors are busy with permanent vacancies but, whether temporary or permanent appointments, full-time or part-time, demand has grown to such as extent that itís very much a candidatesí market as the year draws towards a close.
ìItís my favourite time of the year,î says Kai. ìEveryone gets their heads down to pull in the best results for their clients. Itís hard work, but the buzz around the office is electric.
ìItís great to have such a wide range of opportunities to offer candidates and Iíd say to anyone, if ever you felt like exploring your career options, thereís no time like the present.î
