Equivalent to a Master’s degree, the apprenticeship equips individuals with expertise in data-driven problem-solving, while offering the opportunity to work across sectors like healthcare, finance, public policy, retail, and transport.
Government data shows that Level 6 and 7 apprenticeships increased by 7.1% to 50,110 in 2023/24, making up 14.8% of all apprenticeship starts for 2023/24[iii]. The ability to balance work and study makes higher level apprenticeships particularly attractive to graduates seeking to enhance their skills, as well as those seeking a career change.
The OR Society’s 24-month apprenticeship teaches advanced mathematical techniques, modelling, simulation, and optimisation, allowing graduates to apply their knowledge to real-world problems, guided by industry experts and academic leaders. It includes a comprehensive end-point assessment, consisting of a work-based project report, professional discussion, and multiple-choice tests, culminating in a grade of pass, merit, or distinction.
Alex Burdon, Head of Qualifications & Accreditation at The OR Society, said: "Apprenticeships can play an essential role in developing the next generation of operational researchers. The Level 7 Operational Research Specialist Apprenticeship blends academic rigor with practical experience, providing apprentices with the advanced skills to succeed in this dynamic field. Whether you're a recent graduate or an employer looking to invest in your team, this apprenticeship offers unmatched opportunities to excel in one of the UK's most fast-evolving industries."
OR is a multidisciplinary domain open to individuals from various backgrounds, not just those with mathematics degrees. The apprenticeship gives graduates the tools to solve complex problems, making it ideal for those with strong analytical skills, regardless of prior specialisation or degrees.
A career in operational research offers competitive salaries and exciting prospects. According to The Education Group[iv], operational researchers earn an average of £43,589 nationally, with London salaries reaching up to £70,000. Beyond financial rewards, the field offers a chance to work on impactful projects like improving healthcare delivery, optimising public policy, and driving efficiency in business.
The OR Society will shortly be seeking to expand the scope of its Ofqual recognition with a view to offering EPA services for other qualifications in related disciplines including for the Level 6 Machine Learning Engineer and Level 5 Data Engineer apprenticeship standards. Providers or employers looking to work with the ORS in offering qualifications or accreditation are invited to contact epao@theorsociety.com.
