PCG, the representative body for freelancers and independent professionals, has called for the Queen’s Speech to outline measures to support the rising number of people in self-employment.
With the number of those choosing self-employment rising consistently at a rapid rate, the Queen’s Speech provides an ideal opportunity to outline urgent measures to support this sector, according to the freelancers’ body.
Simon McVicker, Director of Policy and Public Affairs at PCG, said:
“The way we work is fundamentally changing as the number of people choosing self-employment rises at a spectacular rate. The Queen’s Speech is the ideal opportunity to outline small but supportive measures that would help the self-employed community across the country.
“Late payment is still a crippling issue for independent professionals and the only way to put an end to this problem is to make the Prompt Payment Code compulsory for big businesses to sign up to.
“Improving the communications infrastructure is also vital. More efficient rural broadband and mobile coverage are desperately needed in order for infrastructure to catch up with this 21st Century way of working.
“These are just some simple ways that the Government can help independent professionals to get on and be successful. PCG will be outlining many more ways to support the sector in our ‘freelancers manifesto’ which we will be launching in the autumn.”
