22,909 positions created

September sees a positive increase in job creation for the Energy and Hospitality sector

Over 22,909 jobs have been created across the 21 key UK industries. Most noticeably there was a welcome rise in job creation within the Energy sector with over 1000 jobs created compared to this time last year. The Hospitality sector also saw continued success building on Augustís positive JCI of 194 with in excess of 1900 jobs created this month.

September saw the highest job creation figure for the Property and Environmental sector with a JCI figure of 413, the highest for this sector in 2004.

The JCI figures are determined by comparing the number of jobs created within UK industrial sectors each month with the number of jobs created for the corresponding month in the previous year. The JCI figure shows individual industry performance, measured as a percentage above or below the number of jobs created from a year ago. From these figures, the following trends have been highlighted:

Septemberís Front Runners

Property and Environment ñ With a JCI of 413 this sector takes the lead for the first time in 2004

Energy ñ The return of the cold weather has seen a boost for the Energy sector with the JCI figure rising to 248 compared to ñ42 in August

Hospitality ñ The Leisure and Hospitality sector sees a continuation of last monthís job creation success of 194 with this Septemberís JCI figure rising to 212

Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals ñ Positive job creation index for this sector with 726 jobs created this month in comparison to 59 positions created in August

Septemberís Chasers

Travel ñ The end of the summer holidays seems to have slowed job creation in the Travel sector, with Septemberís JCI figure dropping to ñ99 seeing the lowest figure for this sector in 2004

Insurance and Pensions ñ This sector sees a disappointing JCI of ñ55 possibly due to the continued insecurity still present in this sector

Richard MacMillan, Managing Director of Adecco UK and Ireland said: ìThis months job creation index is a prime example of the seasonal effect on recruitment, whilst the trend sector slows after the summer, the energy sector gears up for the busy winter months. The most remarkable improvement was in the Property and Environment sector, which has often struggled in producing high job creation figures. It is also reassuring to see the Pharmaceuticals and Engineering sectors return to their previous levels of job creation, signifying the end of a what was a challenging quarter for these industries.î

Ray Murphy of Mandis commented, The September figures show a plus balance of job creation in both the manufacturing and service sectors. This reflects buoyant levels of business confidence stretching from chemicals and engineering through to energy, telecomms, support services, leisure and finance. This bodes well for the closing quarter of 2004.
