Spring Surge in Demand Expected for Retirement Rentals

Knight Frank[i], forecasts a 150% increase in senior rental properties in the UK over the next five years, driven by the UK's ageing population and attracting more institutional investors to the sector.

This prediction coincides with growing demand seen by My Future Living, the UK’s leading retirement rental brand, this Spring as retirees increasingly recognise the benefits of renting in sociable retirement communities. Other research from Scottish Widows shows that 30% of people expect to rent in retirement[ii].

Chris Carter Keall, CEO, My Future Living said: “Renting in a retirement community is becoming popular, both for lifelong renters and those looking to downsize and free up capital. Older adults want more than just a home - they want lively communities that offer independent living but with access to a social life with similar aged people.

“Our properties offer maintenance-free living in welcoming developments where residents can build lasting friendships. Being part of a community in later life enhances wellbeing and helps combat loneliness, especially for those living alone.”

Developments usually have communal lounges and organise social activities, such as coffee mornings and local outings. Most properties also include a 24-hour careline and an onsite manager, plus My Future Living offers lifetime assured tenancies, giving retirees the stability of a permanent home without the uncertainty of short-term rental arrangements.

Margaret James aged 78 years loves her one-bedroom property at Charles Dickens Court retirement development in Portsmouth which she has rented through My Future Living for more than 32 years.  She has had lots of different neighbours over the years, but the feeling of community has always felt the same.

Margaret says: “We have a lovely outdoor communal area in the gardens where the residents meet up in the warmer months for drinks and chats. It is a friendly and supportive environment. I love to garden and even though there is no responsibility to maintain the gardens, I really enjoy taking care of the area where the residents all congregate.”

One of the many benefits of renting is having the assured tenancy which means Margaret has protection from eviction and can stay for as long as she wishes. Margaret adds: “I won’t ever move from Charles Dickens Court. It is my home and always will be.”
