Tomorrow is Small Business Saturday - the first initiative of its kind in the UK. It’s aimed at encouraging everyone in the UK to support small businesses, both on the day and beyond. Small Business Saturday has been a huge success in the United States, where it led to 100 million Americans spending $5.5 billion.

John Salt, director at totaljobs.com gives has given his thoughts on the benefits of working for an SME and the opportunity that Small Business Saturday presents for SMEs.

“According to George Osborne’s Autumn Statement, the UK economy is growing faster than any other major economy. With recent research from the ICAEW highlighting that 25 per cent of SMEs expect growth of 10 per cent or more in the next 12 months, this recovery is clearly being driven by smaller UK PLC.

However, totaljobs.com research shows a perception among jobseekers that larger companies offer better career progression and salaries. In fact, the opposite is often the case; employees are more likely to be noticed in an SME and rewarded with promotions and pay rises. It’s much easier to be overlooked at larger companies.

Small Business Saturday poses a brilliant opportunity for SMEs to communicate the benefits and opportunities of working for smaller companies to jobseekers. They are vital to the UK economy, providing a wealth of opportunities to grow, learn and succeed.”
