The scramble is on to sign up the next generation of techies. By 2008, American companies are projected to need over 2 million new, highly-skilled IT workers. Despite the popularity of the Internet, cell phones and Game Boys among the young, high tech is still considered un-cool. The technology industry has launched a PR campaign to convince students to pursue maths, science and technology courses. Gettech.org will also target minorities and girls, who are considered to be least likely to enrol in advanced maths and science classes. Supporters say the program is crucial to encourage a new generation of IT professionals who will eventually participate in the New Economy.
