With The Flexible Working Bill In Place, How Can Remote Workers Maintain Professionalism To Ensure Success?

Millions of workers across the UK are set to have more control over their working patterns after the Flexible Working Bill has achieved Royal Assent. The bill means that anyone will have the right to request flexible or remote working from day one of a new job.

However, a 2021 YouGov survey reveals that 62% of respondents believe that young workers working from home will struggle to progress more than their counterparts in the office. 

With this in mind, Kirsty Fishwick from DLC Training who specialises in remote learning and development has shared his tips to help remote workers maintain professionalism,  ensure success and give them the best chance of progression.

Establish a Routine

“Routine is the first essential component to remote working success. Setting yourself regular work hours that align with your personal preferences, productivity and your team’s expectations means you can stay consistent. Not only with this maximise your productivity but it will help encourage a healthy work/life balance which is essential to keep you working at your best.”

Set Up a Dedicated Workspace

“The environment you work in can hugely influence the way you work and creating a dedicated workspace is crucial for establishing a professional mindset. Designate a specific area in your home as your workspace, preferably a quiet, well-lit area that is free of distractions. Set up a comfortable chair, a desk and the required equipment to replicate the office environment as much as possible.”

Utilise Technology

“Make sure you utilise and have access to the right tools to help enhance your remote working experience like project management software, communication platforms and video conferencing tools that will help streamline workflow, allow virtual collaboration and manage tasks efficiently. It’s easy to overlook these tools but as a remote worker it would be impossible to do your job efficiently without them!”

Dress Professionally

“Of course, while it’s all too tempting to stay in joggers and even pyjamas when we’re not leaving the house, dressing professionally will impact your mindset and your productivity. As part of your routine, getting dressed as if you were going into the office will mimic a more traditional work morning and help you to transition into work mode, preparing you for any upcoming meetings or unexpected video calls.”

Communicate Effectively

“Communication is key in the workplace but even more so when you’re working virtually. Making the most of appropriate channels such as email, messaging platforms and video calls will help you stay connected to your team. Be proactive in the way you seek clarification and respond promptly to messages to allow an open flow of communication. Good communication helps teams remain collaborative, prevents misunderstandings and maintains a good level of professionalism without being in the same room.”

Kirsty summarises: “Remote working requires a level of self-discipline and motivation that when achieved makes for a well-balanced working life. Set clear goals and deadlines, take regular breaks and maintain a to-do list using the software available. Hold yourself accountable for meetings and routing and be a proactive communicator within your team to stay engaged and create positive working relationships albeit virtually.”
