In his Spending Review yesterday the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, highlighted a disparity between public sector and private sector wages, adding he "cannot justify a significant, across-the-board" pay increase for all public sector workers in the circumstances.

Unemployment though low by historic standards at 4.8%, rose sharply by 0.7 percentage points on the quarter. Redundancies reached a record high of 314,000 suggesting that unemployment will continue to rise over the winter.

The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) has been extended further to March 2021 following the Chancellor's announcement. The CJRS will now remain open for a further five months until the end of March 2021. Joanne Frew, head of employment practice at legal business DWF, commented:
