“Today’s figures show in October to December the number of young people who are NEET increased by 5,000 on the previous quarter. Research from the EET also shows that young people who have had multiple encounters with business while at school are significantly less likely to be NEET and earn, on average, 18% more than peers who haven’t. With the skills shortage persisting and youth unemployment continually above the national average, it is clear that more is required to ensure the large number of those who are still NEET are given the appropriate guidance to get themselves into employment. To ensure this happens, young people need to be offered encounters with local businesses, given information about the labour market and careers available to them, and have a plan that reflects their strengths. This is the approach The Careers & Enterprise Company has taken, and through our work we aim to ensure that every child, no matter their location, is equipped with the skills they need to fulfil their potential.”
