Compliance training provider Skillcast has reported a 250% increase in interest in its Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence training course over the last month, highlighting a clear workforce concern about ensuring they use AI correctly.
The spike comes amid growing scrutiny of unfiltered AI models, placing corporate boards under mounting pressure to unlock AI’s commercial potential without breaching fast-evolving ethical and regulatory boundaries.
Reflecting the ongoing discourse about the December outages at Amazon Web Services (AWS), where at least two incidents were linked to its internal AI systems, this trend highlights the challenges of managing autonomous technology, with the line between human oversight and AI autonomy increasingly blurred.
The embrace of AI by giant tech corporations, even when faced with operational challenges, appears to be driving concern among professionals. Further data from Skillcast shows that UK Google searches for ethics of artificial intelligence have increased by 25% year-on-year, indicating the shift in conversation from theoretical risk to targeted practical policies.
This comes as employees are expected to understand different forms of AI, from generative to agentic systems, recognise key industry risks, and stay informed on consistent changes in guidance as AI continues to evolve rapidly.
Vivek Dodd, CEO of Skillcast, commented:
“The honeymoon phase of AI is over, and we are seeing a fundamental shift in how businesses are viewing this latest development. The initial excitement around its commercial potential is now being dampened by the very real risks it poses when operating outside of clear and correct rules and regulations.
“For HR and compliance leaders, simply having a general awareness of AI is no longer enough. The discourse surrounding Amazon’s internal use of AI agents serves as a significant case study, highlighting why companies must move toward a deeper understanding of oversight and accountability. Teams must be empowered to understand how it works fully, feel confident navigating and weeding through a landscape of misinformation, and be able to identify the correct regulations and the framework their business workforces’ AI applications should operate in.
“By focusing on practical workplace ethics, companies can build the regulatory resilience they need to innovate confidently, navigating a challenging and ever-changing landscape.”
