Despite this trend, three of the most commonly posted summer jobs in May 2018, “Summer Associate,” “Teacher,” and “Activity Leader,” remained the top postings in the same month for 2025.
The Summer Jobs That Stand The Test of Time
In May 2018, “Activity Leader” was the most advertised summer job, followed by “Summer Associate” and “Teacher.” In May 2025, the ranking had shifted: “Summer Associate” took the top spot, followed by “Teacher” and then “Activity Leader.” Despite an overall decline in the share of summer job postings, these three roles remained the most commonly advertised.
Of the three, only “Teacher” saw growth in its share of postings, rising from 5.8% in May 2018 to 6.2% in May 2025. In contrast, “Activity Leader” fell from 6.8% to 5%, and “Summer Associate” dipped slightly from 6.4% to 6.3% over the same period.
Matt Burney, Senior Strategic Advisor at Indeed, commented: “The patterns in summer jobs reflect broader labour market trends: more competition for fewer roles. Still, these jobs remain valuable for young people to gain practical experience in hands-on, business, or academic settings. While opportunities have declined, summer jobs haven’t disappeared. It’s important for young people to stay informed about the job market and what’s on offer. When seeking a role, applicants should identify which skills they possess that could add value, whether through sharing, teaching, or applying them in ways that make them a strong candidate for the position.”
A Rise of Education-Focused Postings
Education-related job postings are increasingly prominent in the UK's summer job market. Indeed’s Hiring Lab data shows that education roles comprised only 9% of all summer job postings on June 1, 2022. However, this percentage rose significantly in the following years for the same date: 21% in 2023, 19% in 2024, and 21% in 2025. This trend clearly indicates a consistent demand for summer roles in the education sector. The demand is also reflected in pay: the average hourly wage for a “Teacher” is £15.28, meanwhile, a “Summer Associate” earns £12.63, and an “Activity Leader” earns £13.11.
