In fact, according to the study of 300 hiring professionals, conducted by CV-Library, the UK’s leading independent job board, 74.7% of recruiters believe that listening to a hiring manager’s needs is the most important skill to have this year, with the top five including:
- Listening: To truly understand what hiring managers are looking for – 74.7%
- Creativity: Coming up with unique ways to source top talent – 44.6%
- Marketing: Being able to promote the role and the company correctly – 39.8%
- Managing expectations: Delivering on promises and consistently setting and hitting achievable targets – 37.2%
- Big picture thinking: Looking beyond the immediate role you’re placing – 26.8%

“Whether you’re a senior consultant looking to become a top biller, or a junior recruiter in your first role, these skills are critical to your success in the industry. After all, there’s clearly more pressure to boost the candidate experience and make quality hires. You won’t be able to do this unless you truly take on board what your hiring manager is looking for, come up with creative ways to find candidates, advertise your roles in the right way, manage expectations and think in the long-term.”
Alongside this, nearly a quarter (24.2%) believe that the ability to negotiate a job offer with a candidate is a very important skill, as well as having knowledge and understanding of the latest technology (16.4%) and being empathetic with candidates about the struggles of job hunting (12.6%).

Every recruiter is different and the types of roles you hire for will influence what skills you need in 2020. Either way, finding a rhythm and figuring out what works well for you is the best way to become a great recruiter.”
