Data for net migration stats: High-skilled jobs attract foreign jobseekers to UK

Jack Kennedy, Economist at Indeed’s Hiring Lab

“The ONS figures show that net migration to the UK has reached a record high, with most people arriving in 2022 being non-EU nationals. Our own analysis shows that rising non-EU in UK jobs post-Brexit has been led by India and Nigeria, which have become the top countries interested in working in the UK according to Indeed data, alongside the United States. Interest from EU countries is well down on pre-Brexit levels.

“The Indeed data also reveals that many of the top job categories attracting interest from foreign jobseekers are high-skilled roles, including in software development and management. The data underscores that the UK government's new immigration policy is operating as intended, with a shift towards non-European interest in higher skilled jobs in the UK and away from lower skilled roles European workers had previously taken. We’ve also seen a sharp rise in foreign interest in care jobs following the addition of these roles to the shortage occupation list, offering some respite to employers in the sector facing chronic recruitment and retention challenges.”A picture containing text, screenshot, font, diagram
