What is skills-based hiring?
Onrec Explains · Recruitment & HR guides
Skills-based hiring puts the capabilities needed for a role at the centre of selection. Employers ask candidates to demonstrate relevant skills, rather than relying only on qualifications, previous job titles or years of experience.
What changes in practice?
Start by defining the work and the skills required to perform it. Use structured questions or realistic tasks to gather evidence, then assess candidates against consistent criteria. Qualifications can still matter where they are genuinely necessary.
A practical example
For a customer-facing role, a short task might ask a candidate to draft a response to a fictional customer query. A scoring guide could assess clarity, judgement and the next action proposed. Give every candidate comparable instructions and time.
Make the process fair and useful
- Keep assessments proportionate to the role and explain their purpose.
- Offer a clear route to request reasonable adjustments.
- Agree the scoring criteria before reviewing candidates.
- Train assessors and review whether outcomes support the intended hiring goals.
Choosing assessment technology
Ask suppliers what their assessments measure, what evidence supports their use and how results should be interpreted. Review accessibility, candidate feedback and integration with your existing recruitment process. A score should support a considered decision, with accountable people overseeing how it is used.
