The Monster Meter Says: Brits are in for a pound

Monster''s Online Poll reveals that 47% of UK jobseekers find money to be the key motivational factor in choosing a job above other factors such as location, responsibility and company reputation

According to the latest Monster Meter, 47% of UK site users state money as the most important factor when choosing a new job, followed by location (29%), responsibility (19%) and company image and reputation (only 4%).

It''s a little ironic that large UK corporations are spending millions of pounds on advertising campaigns to become employers of choice while the job-seekers they''re trying to entice are more concerned about other factors when considering job opportunities, commented Joe Slavin, the managing director of Monster.co.uk. In 2001 companies in the UK spent 117 million pounds on corporate advertising, he pointed out. Is this money well spent? Perhaps they could use some of their advertising budgets to offer higher salaries to the right professionals.

The Monster Meter asked, What is most important to you when choosing a job?

A total of 2,377 votes were cast by UK site users, revealing:

47% (1,118 votes) said: Money.
29% (690 votes) said: Location.
19% (464 votes) said: Responsibility.
4% (105 votes) said: Kudos of the company name.

Monster users across Europe weren''t quite as concerned with cash as the UK users. In contrast to the UK, only 37% of the other European voters voted for money as their primary consideration when choosing a job. Interestingly, in Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands and France, responsibility was the most popular choice with over a third of voters choosing this response.

The UK results also contrasted significantly with the other countries in the area of company reputation. Along with Ireland and Sweden (at 3.92% and 2% respectively), few UK voters selected company image as the key consideration in choosing a job, while 23% of Italian voters and 20% of Swiss and Spanish voters chose this option.
