In May, The London Borough of Hounslow had become the first local authority in England and Wales to offer jobs online using a new online recruitment management tool.
Developed by an innovative Scottish software company, XPT, the new system allows Hounslow to manage recruitment through a simple web-browser interface and offers job hunters the chance to apply online at any time.
ìWe went live on 1 May 2003 and have received a lot of interest in the siteî, said Nana Amoa-Buahin, Strategic HR Manager at the London Borough of Hounslow. Within the first month we have exceeded our target of 30%. 50% of computed applications were submitted online. This is part of a longer-term plan to deliver the majority of our HR services online and of course it is also an important milestone in our move towards e-government implementation in 2005. The HR Director system will significantly reduce the administration of recruitment and provides us with the flexibility to develop for the future. Critically it also provides managers involved in the recruitment process immediate access to information about past and current vacancies. Many authorities face difficulties in recruiting staff and anything that can simplify and widen the opportunities for people to apply to us must be welcome. We will be using our recruitment advertising to encourage applicants to apply online, though of course will continue with the more traditional application routes too.î
