Internet use varies across Europe - 01/2001

-

According to the latest figures from MMXI Europe, Internet use in Spain is still a male-dominated activity, with women making up only 30 percent of home Internet users.

In contrast, the proportion of women online in Sweden and the UK is 44 percent and 43 percent respectively.

Reflecting the maturity of the Scandinavian Internet market, a high proportion (42 percent) of Denmark's online population is female, while in Germany women account for just over a third (36 percent) of home Internet users.

Other findings from MMXI Europe show that the UK has Europe's largest number of home Internet users, with 12.5 million people accessing the Internet from home in October.

Germany came a close second with 11.3 million users in the same month, followed by France (six million) and Spain (4.5 million). Of the six countries covered, Sweden and Denmark had the least amount of people online, with 3.9 million and 1.9 million respectively. As a percentage of the population, however, both of these countries have a higher proportion of Internet users than other European countries.

Germans are the most regular users of the Internet in Europe, connecting to the web on an average of 11.4 days during October. The average Danish Internet user accessed the Internet on 11.2 days, while Swedes went online 10.8 days in October. Although Danes use the Internet on a regular basis, MMXI Europe's research revealed that they spend less time online per usage day than users in other European countries.
