With the life-coaching craze currently taking the UK by storm, one expert warns those in need of help to think carefully before parting with their hard-earned money.
Scott Watson, a highly qualified therapist and coach to some of the UK’s leading companies, warns potential consumers to beware of life coaches who may have great marketing skills but little in terms of genuine expertise. He also advises that trusting so-called experts who claim to be credible and suitably qualified coaches can be highly dangerous for many clients.
Watson advises that the recent growth of personal coaching in Britain is making it difficult for people in need of support to distinguish genuinely qualified professionals from the rest of the pack. And, having worked with almost four thousand people in business as well as private individuals facing severe personal challenges, Watson has some simple advice for those considering hiring a coach.
Until recently only corporate executives could afford to hire a coach to help them identify new solutions to their problems. But now the service is becoming more popular with the general public, and Watson warns that coaches should be held accountable for the results achieved.
’A coach has to deliver real results rather than just talk a good game, and that’s an entirely different proposition. With so many people claiming to be professional coaches of some kind, clients need to be certain that they are getting the best quality of advice. Before hiring a coach in any capacity, they should check their abilities by asking to read testimonials from satisfied clients,’ says Watson.
He also warns against being pressured to sign a long-term contract designed more to secure financial income for the coach rather than to get the best value for the client. ’Your relationship with your coach should be driven by your desire to continue - not by a coach who simply wishes to generate more income. As coaches and therapists are usually paid by the hour, there is little financial incentive for them to help you achieve the results you really want quickly as this would limit their income,’ concludes Watson.
