Over 47 million Japanese, or 37 percent of the population, now have Internet access, according to a new government survey. That figure represents a 74 percent increase on 1999 figures.
The survey, from the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, found that 24.4 million of those users go online through a mobile device, four times as many as did so in 1999.
Over 37 million use a PC to browse the Web, while 1.4 million use games consoles or televisions to go online.
The Ministry pointed out the numbers for the different access devices added up to a lot more than 47 million because many users go online from more than one device.
