There’s a high demand for temporary workers in the UK due to many factors, such as economic uncertainty, with some businesses hiring temporary positions for project work.
Students and graduates are among the group who are looking for work this summer. However, the number of jobs available for recent graduates is at its lowest level in seven years, with the number of roles being advertised for graduates down by 33% according to Indeed.
With many graduates looking for their first role after finishing university, some are concerned that they aren’t able to find opportunities in the sectors they want to work in.
David Morel, Founder and CEO of Tiger Recruitment, encourages people from entry-level to more senior positions who are looking for work to consider temporary work as an effective option.
He said: “We’re seeing lots of businesses looking to hire more temporary roles because they need a flexible workforce to meet high amounts of workload and cover for any current absences. It is beneficial for employers as it gives them more access to people with specialised skills who can support certain projects. Temp jobs are good for graduates who are looking to diversify their skills and add experience to their CVs; it also helps them towards getting a full-time role in their chosen industry.”
How can you get a temporary job this summer?
Update your CV
David advises individuals to have the most up-to-date CV that is clear, concise, and provides relevant work experience that would be of interest to the employer and the industry they're going into. They need to highlight key skills that meet the demands of the temporary position, catch the recruiters' attention, and show they're able to adapt to the workplace.
Connect with the right recruiters
When it comes to searching for the right temp role, opting to go with a recruitment agency can help simplify the search. David states that recruitment agencies have contacts across various industries and will be the first to be alerted when a temporary job role becomes available in the person's chosen industry. Sites like LinkedIn can also be used to connect with recruiters in certain industries and to stay up to date with the latest roles being advertised.
Conduct your own research
As well as getting in touch with recruiters, David encourages job seekers to carry out their research to see what current temporary jobs are out there and to see which businesses regularly hire. Just doing a Google search will show which businesses are hiring this summer and who has hired for temporary job roles in the past. He says it is important to be persistent and not give up on your job search if you’re struggling to progress to the interview stages.
