For any recruiters specialising in construction the recent news regarding the increase employment under the CIS scheme may lead to conversations with any potential recruits surrounding their tax returns.
Almost 1.1 million people working in construction are employed via the CIS scheme, that’s an 8% increase from last year. While this gives many people the freedom to work in the way that suits them best, it’s important they remember they will be responsible for their CIS tax return and correctly reporting their income to HMRC.
Many people won’t have been taught about this either at school or in work. The rules are hard to get your head around, and need specialist knowledge to apply correctly. For example, CIS workers do not receive their personal allowance before tax meaning they would need to claim it back or risk missing out on thousands of pounds per year.
