Weekly job postings up 5.1%, with vacancies nearing pre-pandemic levels

New data from the UK’s leading independent job board, CV-Library, reveals that job vacancies were up by 5.1% last week, with job numbers nearing pre-pandemic levels and hitting a three-week high.

The job board analysed the amount of jobs posted on its site w/c 21st September and compared this with figures from the previous week. the findings show that vacancies rose significantly in the hospitality (up 68.9%), charity (up 59.3%), design (up 53.5%), media (up 46%) and retail (up 34.1%) industries.

However, job numbers actually dropped by 10.8% in the public sector, by 10.2% in distribution, by 7.9% in administration, by 5% in customer service and by 3.6% in property.

Lee Biggins, founder and CEO of CV-Library, comments:

“Despite tighter restrictions being put in place by the government, we have seen growth in job adverts for the third week in a row now; suggesting that businesses are starting to find their feet amongst the chaos. In particular, it’s positive to see vacancies rising in industries that we know have been hit hard by the pandemic, but it’s also interesting that job numbers have dipped in sectors that were previously thriving.”

When comparing the amount of jobs posted w/c 21st September, with those posted the week that the UK went into lockdown (w/c 23rd March), the findings show that average weekly vacancies were 70.1% higher last week.

In addition to this, when looking at vacancies by region, the findings show that job adverts rose by 26% in Northern Ireland, 17.6% in the East Midlands, 13.4% in Scotland, 6.3% in the West Midlands, 4.3% in the South East, 4% in Wales, 3.7% in the South West, 3.3% in the North West, 1.7% in London and 1.1% in East Anglia. However, they dropped by 0.2% in the North East.

Biggins continues:

“We know that COVID cases are spiking in key locations, but this doesn’t appear to have an impact on the amount of jobs that are being advertised in these areas. It’s positive to see that job numbers are headed in the right direction, and that more companies are looking to grow their workforce during a difficult time of uncertainty. Hopefully, this should be welcome news to job hunters who may feel concerned about their career prospects in the current climate.”
