Things are looking up for UK job boards

Research conducted by whatjobsite suggests that UK job boards are at last seeing sustainable recovery in the job advertising market after two tumultuous years

Research conducted by whatjobsite suggests that UK job boards are at last seeing sustainable recovery in the job advertising market after two tumultuous years. In March 2010, whatjobsite surveyed the UK's leading job boards in order to get a picture of the current state of the market and the outlook for the year ahead. The survey found that:

  • 92% of job boarders say job board traffic is up.

  • 76% of job boarders say application rates are up.

  • 69% of job boarders say the total volume of business is up.

  • 84% of job boarders expect turnover to increase further in the year ahead.

  • 53% of job boarders will hire more staff in the year ahead.

  • 76% of job boarders positive about the SME and corporate recruiter in the year ahead.

The results show a sector that is still struggling after two difficult years but, for the first time in a long time, feeling positive for the future. 69% of the job board surveyed said that the total volume of business is up on a year ago. Most job boards are reporting that the direct advertiser market has rebounded particularly strongly - with 53% saying they had seen increased activity in this segment compared to a lesser 38% reporting increased activity in the recruitment agency segment. What's more, 84% of job boards are predicting strong growth in the year head.

The results of the survey support what many in the sector have been saying since January, says Karl Schweppe, MD of whatjobsite. The sector is slowly on the road to recovery after a couple of tumultuous years. The sector has a long way to go before getting once more reaching the heady days of 2007, but there does seem to be some confidence in the job board sector that this recovery is sustainable.
