Revolutionising jobhunting in Britain - 02/2001

Jobsin pilots scheme with employment service

Jobsin has been chosen to partner the government's Employment Service in a venture which will revolutionise job hunting in Britain.

Eventually all leading online recruitment providers will be offered the chance of links to the official Employment Service site - dramatically extending the choice of vacancies on offer.

The Employment Service has named a small number of partners for the pilot scheme, which is intended to iron out problems before the project is rolled out on a national scale, some time in 2001.

Jobsin chief executive Simon Maisey said: Jobseekers can now visit the Employment Service website and as well as viewing the vacancies on offer there, they can be linked to private sector recruitment sites which may have additional jobs that might otherwise be overlooked.

The Employment Service site can be accessed from any home or office PC, and Prime Minister Tony Blair has revealed plans to make computers available at low cost for sectors of the community on restricted incomes.
Job Centres will also be equipped with Jobpoints - touch-screen kiosks - through which vacancies across the country can be accessed using the sophisticated geographical search facility, said Mr Maisey.

The way in which organizations and companies recruit the people they need has been changed forever by the Internet, said Mr Maisey. Traditional recruitment processes involve advertising, posting out application forms and information packs, sifting responses, shortlisting, assessing and interviewing candidates.

All of this is time consuming and costly. The Internet enables many of these tasks to be completed instantaneously with great accuracy and tremendous penetration.
