The retail and fashion industry sectors are major contributors to UK economy, and while connected in many ways, there are both also very different and are both going through major changes, which will make both sectors stronger and more competitive, internationally, in the long term.

The UK Fashion Industry; Opening London Fashion Week in 2014, Natalie Massenet, Chairman of the British Fashion Council, announced that the value of the UK fashion industry to the UK economy in 2014 was £26 billion; up from £21 billion in 2009 and showing an increase of 22%.

The UK fashion industry is also estimated to support over 790,000 jobs which, although being a slight decrease from 2009, reflected higher productivity and the British Fashion Council is also committed to the creation of more employment opportunities. UK fashion’s total contribution as a whole to the UK economy is now estimated to have risen to over £46 billion, an increase of 23% since 2009.

The UK Retail Industry; The retail sector is also going through a seismic series of changes, as major changes in technology, a huge surge in online sales and the collection of goods from stores takes place. Wholesale and retail trade contributed 16% of the UK economic output and 16% of employment in the UK in 2012. In 2012, the turnover in the UK was estimated to be £150 Billion and over 4 million people were thought to be employed in the industry.

As both sectors change and grow, their employment needs are also changing rapidly. As well as recruiting for Store Managers, Retail Managers and Buyers, both industries are now also recruiting for Social Media Executives, Programmers and E-Commerce Managers.

www.retailandfashionjobs.com has been launched to cater for these changes and is managed by experienced retailers – built by retailers for retailers!
