In today''s tough economic times when white collar jobs are scarce, professionals looking for work stand a better
chance of gaining employment in the fields of technical sales and engineering, according to the human capital management consulting firm T.Williams Consulting, Inc. (TWC), www.twilliams.com.
Management jobs have been especially hard hit recently, with the unemployment rate for those who supervise at 5.8 percent and for those who are supervised at 2.9 percent.
When times get tough, companies try to get by with the people they already have on board, says Mike Sweeny, Managing Director, Talent Acquisition at TWC. On the bright side, companies looking to gain market
share are recruiting top sales people to join their team, Sweeny notes. Top engineering talent is also still in demand.
By the year 2010, there will be an additional 510,000 new jobs for salespeople, and 764,000 jobs for software engineers, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
Another bright spot in the employment picture is the surge of hiring in the fields of security protection and defense contracting. Federal, state, and local law-enforcement agencies and private security firms will likely add thousands of new employees this year.
Anyone who possesses a high security clearance is in great demand right now because of the paperwork and length of time involved in obtaining a clearance, says Sweeny. When the economy picks up, there will be more high-level opportunities for those without specialized skills and
clearances.
