eMarketer reports that the number of mobile phone subscribers worldwide is expected to reach 1.05 billion by Q2 2002, up from 941 million in 2001.
This is according to new statistics from EMC, which reveal that approximately 392.2 million mobile phone users are prepaid subscribers.
The largest market for mobile phones in 2001 was China, with 149.1 million subscribers.
The report says that at the end of 2001, the average revenue per cellular user worldwide was USD34.
During 2001, the average mobile phone subscriber is estimated to have sent 40 SMS messages per month.
