How well do employers treat temporary workers?

.

- Temps vote for new Employer Excellence award as part of national campaign -

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) is to introduce a new award for ''Employer Excellence'' as part of this year''s National Temporary Workers Week (NTWW), to be held from 14-18 October.

NTWW, an initiative set up by the REC, aims to recognise the one million plus temporary workers assigned each week to fill job vacancies in the UK and the contribution they make to the economy. Recruitment agencies and companies up and down the country will celebrate the value temporary workers bring to the workforce by taking part in a variety of activities.

However, this year sees a new award voted by temporary workers and their agencies, to be presented to an employer considered best at integrating temporary staff into the workplace. Winners will be announced at the Recruitment Industry Conference on 11th October.

The ''Award for Employer Excellence'', sponsored by Qwiz, a leading competency assessment solutions company, has been developed at the request of temporary workers and recruitment agencies across the UK for this years NTWW campaign. It aims to recognise employers that demonstrate how much they value the contribution that temporary staff make, excel in their efforts to help them fully integrate into the community of the workplace, and utilise the skills and expertise they offer.

The panel of judges will consider the following criteria:

Induction of new temporary staff
Steps taken to make temporary staff feel like part of the team
Ways in which the company recognises the contribution of temporary staff

Two other awards running for the second year include the ''Duty Calls'' Award for exceptional nurses and carers, supported by Resource Partner''s FastFlow service; and the prestigious ''One in a Million Award'' supported by Cash Friday, a leading payroll services company. The ''One in a Million Award'' will be presented to a temp who has performed above and beyond the call of duty. The winner will receive a fabulous break for two in a four star hotel in Las Vegas, including spending money to try their luck in the many casinos. Last year''s ''One in a Million Award'' winner was Leon Brown who won a trip to the Caribbean.

Commenting on the awards, Tim Nicholson, Chief Executive of the REC, said:

Temps are the UK''s invisible workforce. Without them services and business couldn''t''t operate. National Temporary Workers Week is a fun way of acknowledging the value brought by the 1.3 million temps registered with UK agencies. It''s an opportunity for companies and the recruitment industry to say ''thank you''.

In addition to finding a truly outstanding individual for the ''One in the Million Award'', we thought it necessary to introduce an award for best employer. Temps themselves now have the opportunity to commend the companies they enjoy working for. We are looking for employers who not only help temps feel part of their team, but actually recognise the contribution they bring to the company and the economy.
