New research shows e-learning has come of age as it becomes <br>set to outstrip other forms of workplace training

learndirect, the UKís largest supplier of on-line tutor supported, have unveiled new research at this weekís CBI Conference showing that the use of e-learning in the workplace is set to dramatically double with almost half of all employers recognising the benefits of on-line training against other forms. Nevertheless, a worrying one quarter of SMEs across the country donít believe they spend enough on training to maintain and develop their businesses.

íThe Business Achiever Reportí, an independent research analysis, sets out SME owner managersí attitudes to training their workforce. Highlights of the report, out today, include:

Encouragingly nearly 60 percent of SMEs believe their own business is performing better than 12 months ago; and 43 per cent believe the economic outlook is getting better.

97 per cent believe the training and development of their workforce has a direct impact on business performance and nearly half of all businesses plan to increase their training budget over the next 12 months.

The future application of e-learning in the workplace is set to dramatically increase as 45 per cent of employers (up from 23 per cent application of e-learning last year) recognise the benefits of on-line training against other forms. For example, day courses are estimated to take a drop from 88 per cent to 70 per cent.

The findings of the íBusiness Achiever Reportí indicate that employers are becoming increasingly aware of the very real business benefits of investing in training in the workplace. As the research shows, e-learning is set to become a focal point for enhancing performance related productivity. As part of the governmentís plan to increase workforce skills, learndirect business is creating a national network of premier business centres, led by training advisors, which will provide a comprehensive service for small and medium sized companies, including a wide variety of inexpensive, flexible online training courses.

Recruitment and retention can add up to the most costly element of an SMEís budget. Training has to fit the needs of the individual SME if there is to be a benefit to the business. learndirect has put together a solutions-based training package especially to show how to find and keep the right staff ñ and train them to match business demands.
