HR professionals urged to boost Giving

.

The Giving Campaign, a national initiative to boost charitable giving in the UK, is urging human resources professionals across the UK to join to get involved with Payroll Giving. Payroll Giving is an ideal way for businesses to illustrate their commitment to causes that are close to the heart of their employees and to provide support for their local community.

Payroll Giving enables employees to make charitable donations straight from their gross salary (before tax has been deducted). Therefore, for a standard rate taxpayer wanting to give a 10 donation, it will only cost 7.80, or just 6 for higher rate taxpayers. As an extra incentive, the Government adds 10% to every donation made in this way, so the value of donations is almost double the cost to the donor.

Pledge 10
Value to charity 11
Cost to donor (paying 22% tax) 11
Cost to donor (paying 40% tax) 6

Terri Hathaway, Campaign Manager for Payroll Giving at The Giving Campaign comments: ìLast year, 86 million was raised for charities through Payroll Giving, although only 1% of UK companies currently offer the scheme. Payroll Giving is good for business, easy to administer and highly valued by employees, enabling companies to raise their image and boost staff morale and retention, while also doing something good for the community.î
