The Welsh speaking teachersí union, UCAC, has responded to concerns about difficulties in recruiting Welsh-speaking teachers by launching an online teacher recruitment service - totally available through the medium of Welsh. The service has been developed by working in partnership with Eteach, the UKís number one teacher recruitment website.
About 500 schools in Wales - a quarter of the total ñ teach through the medium of the Welsh language. Although they do not all face the teacher shortages experienced elsewhere in the UK, there are definite and commonly agreed problems in finding Welsh speaking teachers in an increasing number of subjects, including Science and Welsh as a second language.
The new recruitment website is based on the functionality of Eteachís existing website, www.eteach.com, making the user experience (be that teacher, school, or LEA) available through the Welsh language. This will provide an important new network for the education community in Wales, including LEAs and the initial teacher training colleges: ìWeíre very excited about the new site, as thereís a real need for this type of service,î said Edwyn Williams, UCACís General Secretary, ìand weíre hopeful that this will help our schools find the teachers they need.î
Available through www.athrawon.com, teachers will not only find instant access to jobs in the medium of Welsh but also time saving online tools such as:
detailed information on every post, every school and the local area
email alerts which automatically tell them about jobs that meet their needs
online CVs that can be used to apply online or even let schools headhunt teachers.
